Testing the Scripture’s Stories of the Natural and Supernatural
Bible believers must not fear to put any part of God’s Word, the Scriptures of the Holy Bible, to the ‘test’. They should hold it up to the most stringent scrutiny to check its truthfulness and accuracy. These checks may be possible for any events recorded in the Bible, as far as the limits of current observational tools of modern archeology and science permit. This includes the most extraordinary events, such as the world-wide global flood historically recorded in Genesis 7. For if any part of any of the Bible’s stories are not true, then it is not perfectly trustworthy and therefore is unreliable and not worth believing in, at all.
Testing involves consistently interpreting each Biblical event in light of the Bible’s own language and intent. When the Bible records the stories Jesus told as parables to illustrate a principle, they are to be understood as a story of characters who may not necessarily be historical people. Yet the Bible clearly indicates that Jesus did tell that story and the principle it illustrates is really true, even if it was not a historical account of particular actual people.
Similarly, other Biblical recorded events are true historical accounts of real people, as is clear from their specific names and associated genealogies that are mentioned, as well as the historical factual style of the Bible’s language describing the events.
Some of these historical stories include miracles which are clearly stated as being supernatural events caused by divine intervention from beyond the natural realm. The writings of these incredible stories were directed and inspired by the same all-knowing eternal God who divinely intervened with His miracles in these stories. So they can be trusted as true, and may be verified with the following observations.
Close examination of the details of the miraculous stories can show that there are not any plausible alternative explanations or natural causes for the event. Forensic investigation of the natural clues left behind from the aftermath of the event may show that it happened as recorded.
Clues such as the remains from an Egyptian army with its horses and chariots found at the bottom of the Red Sea, indicate that the waters of a miraculously parted Red Sea suddenly collapsed and enclosed the crossing army which was pursuing the Israelites who were crossing the sea ahead of them on dry land. 1 This helps to verify an event recorded in Exodus 14. Why would an entire army voluntarily plunge themselves into a sea only to drown themselves? Didn’t they first enter the crossing site when the waters were still miraculously parted? This allowed them to get to the middle of the sea crossing where they are now found.
God may employ natural causes in executing some of His extraordinary events, such as the strong east wind of Exodus 14:21 that drove back the waters of the Red Sea. However, the timing of that occurrence and that of the collapse is clearly providential and miraculous. God is the ultimate cause of natural events as well.
Testing Biblical stories do not eliminate a need for faith, any more than sitting in a chair eliminates one’s continuing “faith” that that chair can always support one’s weight. Rather, affirmative tests strengthen one’s faith in what has been tested.
A most extraordinary event is the flood of Noah’s day which the Bible historically records as covering the entire Earth in Genesis 7:19-21.
The water prevailed more and more upon the earth, so that all the high mountains everywhere under the heavens were covered 20 The water prevailed fifteen cubits higher, and the mountains were covered. 21 All flesh that moved on the earth perished, birds and cattle and beasts and every swarming thing that swarms upon the earth, and all mankind.
If the flood covered only part of the Earth, Noah would not have had to build the Ark in which his family was delivered, but could have traveled to the other side of the Earth between God’s warning of the flood and when it actually came. But he did not as that would have been futile.
Not only are there existing features of our current world that indicate that a global flood actually occurred, but the existence of that flood explains some puzzling questions of science that the scientific community has no other plausible explanations for.
In a future article, we will explore some of these questions in science that are satisfyingly answered by the existence of a global flood, while examining ten different features of today’s world that show that the worldwide flood of Noah’s day really did cover the entire Earth, just as the Bible clearly describes. Please come back to the next issue of this publication, for this intriguing investigation.
